first day of work

Starting a new job is exciting, and a bit unnerving. After finding your desk, the kitchen, the bathroom, and other various basics, you also realize that you are going to start to get to know some folks and a business very well. Or you hope to do so.

Today is my first day at a blogging platform company, Six Apart. I never would have guessed 1, 2, or 5 years ago that I would be here, when I first heard about the company. Life is so unpredictable.

I'll be doing business development and strategy, mainly for Typepad (which powers my fascinating blog) and also for Vox, etc.

Good news of the day:
Lots of exciting things around the corner for my job and the product.
People I know and like are here (familiar faces are good).
Get to commute in with Fredo.

The bad news of the day:
Parking is more expensive than gas.
Citizen Cake opened a kiosk on the same city block as the office.

Disorienting:
Cubicles.
Lots of people I don't know.
Client-based email (blach).

Welcome to Half Moon Bay

We just met some of our neighbors.....and also discovered three chickens on our newly landscaped yard. They belong to our neighbors, Manfred, Christine (and son Mike) down the street, with a gorgeous garden. They own an ivy nursery. Must be a good market for ivy!?

We sure aren't in Menlo Park anymore.

Gorgeous Yard - it's hard to love something so much

Over the last couple of years, the intensity and fragility of loving something alive and that is under your care has woken me up to real responsibility. First, it's having 2 children. Now, it's having an enormous park as your very own backyard.

Boo hoo, some urban plant enthusiasts may say. Our yard, with it's 300+ trees, thousand plants, and fish pond, was a powerful enticement to move out to Half Moon Bay. I always felt drawn to gardens and nature. Relaxing in it is one thing. Presiding over it is completely different.

I have always been someone who loves cities, people, and "things to do" - not "things to care for other than myself, and my Fredo."

Maybe it was realizing the fleeting nature of life that sparked me to wake up out of my content, self-centered life and aspire to grow and nurture lives around me.

Waking up early can be painful.
